IATF 16949:2016. Requirements for Automotive Parts and Spare Parts Producing Organizations

IATF 16949  sets out the particular requirements for the application of ISO 9001 for series production and original spare parts in the automotive industry. Certification is a prerequisite for all suppliers who supply directly to manufacturers and, depending on the contractual requirements of customers, also for suppliers at lower levels.

The main objective of IATF 16949 is  continuous improvement, with an emphasis on the prevention of defects and waste in the supply chain. The standard therefore ensures that the car's components, parts and safety systems meet the requirements specified by customers as well as the applicable regulations. On the other hand, this standard promotes the continuous improvement of products at better prices, as well as the research and development of new components that influence the safety of the vehicle itself and its environment.

The main changes in this version are:
 

  • Applicability for products that incorporate software. 

  • Additional requirements on product safety. 

  • Strengthening the process approach by introducing risk-based thinking.

  • The control of suppliers and subcontracted processes is enhanced.
