Certification Carbon footprint of organizations

An organization's carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions generated directly or indirectly by its activities.

Organization/event carbon footprint: calculation, reduction and offsetting and carbon neutrality

Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest challenges facing nations, governments, industries and citizens in the coming decades. In response, international, regional, national and local initiatives are being developed and implemented to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere. Such GHG initiatives are based on quantifying, monitoring, reporting and verifying GHG emissions and/or removals.

An organization/event'scarbon footprint is a tool for determining, evaluating, and communicating the effect of products, services, and organizations on climate change.

ISO 14064 Certification: Effective Management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

There are currently various standards, references and guides for the calculation of the Carbon Footprint of organizations/events, both general and sectoral, promoted by various public or private institutions of recognized prestige. For example, GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, etc.

The purpose of the verification is to ensure, independently, that the declaration made regarding greenhouse gas emissions, through the emissions report prepared, is complete, i.e. accurate, coherent, transparent and without significant discrepancies.

Organisational/event carbon footprint checks can be of the following types:

  • CO2 Calculated: the carbon footprint is calculated with internationally recognised benchmarks and its right of use is granted annually.

  • Reduced CO2: the carbon footprint is calculated with internationally recognised benchmarks and the organisation has to demonstrate that it has reduced its emissions.

  • CO2 Offset: the carbon footprint is calculated with internationally recognized benchmarks and the resulting tons of CO2 are offset with carbon credits such as VERs or CERs, obtained through recognized high-quality carbon credit programs.

  • Carbon Neutral: the carbon footprint is calculated with internationally recognised benchmarks, and following the hierarchical order, an Emissions Reduction Plan is carried out, and residual emissions are offset through recognised compensation mechanisms. In this case, the currently existing reference is the ISO 14068:2023 Standard.

Internal benefits for your organization:

  • GHG risk management and identification of abatement opportunities.
  • Public reporting and participation in voluntary GHG Programs (e.g., existing national registries).
  • Participation in mandatory reporting programs.
  • Participation in GHG markets.

Benefits for your customers:

  • Increase the credibility, consistency, and transparency of GHG quantification, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Recognition for early action.
  • Strengthening of the organization as socially responsible.

Calculated and offset carbon footprint: a step towards sustainability

Calculating and offsetting the carbon footprint is essential to move towards a sustainable future, reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible practices in all industries.

Sectors and experience of the Certification

Related Industries

The Carbon Footprint of the organization/event is applicable to any company that is interested in calculating, reducing or offsetting its emissions GHG. Although there is already experience of verification in all sectors of activity, in recent years the so-called diffuse sectors (transport, agri-food, waste, etc.) have increased their sensitivity in this aspect.

Integration with other systems

AENOR offers this verification service, making it possible for it to be carried out in the same activity as the regulatory GHG verification, if the organisation is subject to the National Allocation Plan.

Our experience

AENOR carries out the annual verification of hundreds of organisations from all sectors of activity, many of which include reduction actions in their verified report.

Products add to the challenge of decarbonization

More than 100 products from different sectors, mainly agri-food and construction, have verified their carbon footprint with AENOR certificates of Calculated CO2, Reduced C02 or Carbon Neutral.
