ISO 39001 Road Safety Management System

ISO 39001 helps organizations reduce, and ultimately eliminate, the incidence and risk of deaths and serious injuries resulting from these accidents

Reducing traffic accidents, a shared responsibility

Road traffic accidents are the eighth leading cause of death in the world according to the WHO. The ISO 39001:2013 standard helps organizations reduce, and ultimately eliminate, the incidence and risk of deaths and serious injuries resulting from these accidents.

The ISO 39001 Standard for Road Safety Management Systems, applicable to public and private entities that interact with the road system, is a tool that helps organizations to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, the incidence and risk of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic accidents.

The implementation of a Road Management System in accordance with ISO 39001 entails three major advantages for organizations:

  • It promotes a Safe System approach whose long-term objective is the elimination of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic accidents, based on the promotion of good practices to be developed based on the analysis of the most relevant road safety risks in its processes.
  • It avoids significant economic costs and loss of profits in the company, while it can improve the productivity and profitability of your business, by guaranteeing maximum safety to your employees.
  • It reinforces its position in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility, adopting the spirit of shared responsibility for Road Safety among the different actors in the road system.

The Road Safety Management System focuses on the organization, its Road Safety objectives and goals, and guides the planning of activities that allow them to be achieved through a Safe Road Safety System approach.

Sectors and experience of the Certification

Related Industries

Some activities of organizations, public or private, small or large, covered by the road safety management system are:

  • Use of the road system for employees, whether on the way to or on mission, in public or private vehicles, as a passenger or driver, and as a pedestrian or cyclist.

  • Transportation of goods and people within the road system carried out by the organization or contracted to other organizations

  • Activities that generate traffic to or from locations controlled or influenced by the organization such as supermarkets, schools and highly visited spaces

  • Services and products related to the road system, such as transport services, management, planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure, vehicles and related products and emergency medical response.

Even though some organizations only have a small number of processes related to road safety issues, these can be important for reducing deaths and serious injuries.

Integration with other systems

AENOR offers the possibility of carrying out Road Safety Certification in conjunction with other management systems such as ISO 900114001 or 45001, service certifications such as EN 13816 or with the  Regulatory Audit of Occupational Risk Prevention in a single and integrated process, which implies an optimization of audit times and, therefore, of audit costs.

Our experience

AENOR began the Road Safety Management System certification in 2013. ALSA was the first company to receive the Road Safety Management System certificate issued by AENOR worldwide. Since then, AENOR has issued around 70 certificates not only in Spain, but internationally in Chile, Peru, Panama and Italy.
