Certification against deforestation

The European Union has approved Regulation 2023/1115 (EUDR) to ensure that certain products traded on its market are deforestation-free, legally compliant, and traceable. It affects the following raw materials: coffee, cocoa, soy, palm oil, rubber, wood and cattle, both raw and processed products.

From 30 December 2026, large and medium-sized operating companies that act as the first link in the supply chain in the EU will have to apply the EUDR Regulation, while micro and small companies will have a start date of 30 June 2027. For their part, companies that market products and act as downstream operators and traders in the EU, regardless of their size, must also comply from 30 December 2026.

AENOR's comprehensive proposal in the fight against deforestation:

In a market that is increasingly oriented towards sustainability, AENOR's comprehensive proposal in the fight against deforestation makes different options available to organisations:

  • The specific training programme for EUDR, designed for producers, operators and traders, who will be able to learn in detail all the relevant aspects of the EUDR regulation, its obligations, as well as keys and guidelines that help to comply with it.

  • Accompaniment in the process of defining and/or implementing the work system for producers and operators, both in information management and in risk assessment and mitigation.

  • Data analysis together with its technology partner Coolx. A platform that makes it easier for producers to upload and manage all the information necessary for EUDR compliance, simplifying the process and reinforcing traceability.

  • Voluntary and independent certification that strengthens credibility and simplifies due diligence processes at every link in the supply chain.

Alliance with COOLX:

AENOR has established a strategic alliance with Coolx, a technology partner specialising in geospatial traceability and the requirements of the EUDR Regulation.

Thanks to this collaboration, AENOR provides organisations with an advanced technological platform that allows:

  • Precise geolocation of plots using satellite technology.

  • Monitoring deforestation, through the analysis of images that detect changes in land use.

  • Full traceability from cultivation to the end operator, covering the entire supply chain.

  • The use of this platform not only facilitates compliance with the requirements of the EUDR, but also simplifies the implementation of the due diligence system, improves information management and contributes to the identification and mitigation of risks in the supply chain.

Key Benefits

In relation to certification, AENOR has developed two specific solutions to support the agents involved in complying with the EUDR.

One of them is aimed at producers and not only guarantees compliance with regulations, but also provides competitive advantages, integrating benefits such as the following:

  • Positioning as a preferred producer.

  • Certified verification of compliance.

  • Simplifying due diligence.

This verification is aimed at producers who must demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the EUDR Regulation at source, especially with regard to the traceability and legality of products.

On the other hand, AENOR has developed a specific certification for operators, aimed at those responsible for guaranteeing the traceability and legality of the products they market. This certification is based on the third pillar of the EUDR: that the relevant products are covered by a due diligence statement. Among the benefits that an operator obtains are the following:

  • Positioning as a responsible operator: Certified companies are positioned as actors committed to sustainability and EUDR compliance, which can translate into competitive advantages and preference on the part of customers and business partners.

  • Simplifying due diligence: By having a certified system, operators can structure and automate the due diligence process, reducing the administrative burden and the risk of errors.

  • Risk minimization: The certification of a management system of a due diligence system allows for a deep and structured analysis. The identification of the associated risks, as well as the planning of actions contribute to reducing the risk of marketing products that do not comply with the EUDR regulation, reducing exposure to sanctions, border blockades or reputational damage.

  • Technical support and strategic alliance: AENOR offers specialised support with CoolX to facilitate the operational implementation of the EUDR, including digital solutions for traceability and document management.

A certification-based approach reinforces the principles of transparency, traceability and due diligence, in line with the objectives of the EUDR and with the integration of complementary management systems
