Zero Waste Certification
AENOR's Zero Waste certificate certifies that organisations recover their waste fractions, preventing them from having landfill as their final destination.
The importance of waste management
Neglect or inadequate waste management produces negative impacts on the environment, causing contamination of water, soil and air, affecting ecosystems and human health.
The prioritisation of prevention and reduction, as well as good management, allows waste to be minimised and converted into resources that contribute to the saving of raw materials, achieving a positive effect on the conservation of natural resources and ecosystems, and the sustainability of our activity.
Requirements for certification based on the Circular Economy
The Circular Economy model aims to invert the current waste management pyramid, maximizing waste prevention and recovery actions (reduction, reuse, recycling, and energy recovery).
The AENOR Zero Waste certification is aligned with the actions of the OECD, UNEP (2030 Agenda), G20, European Union, and Spain regarding the Circular Economy.
The requirements of this certification scheme are aligned with international actions related to the Circular Economy, along with other certifications such as Ecodesign, End-of-Waste, and Water Footprint, among others.
This scheme does not imply the complete absence of waste generation, but rather organized management that allows for reducing waste generation, preparing waste for reuse, and/or transforming waste into raw materials, reintroducing them into the value chain.
Benefits and beneficiaries
Among the benefits of this certification scheme, it is worth highlighting the optimisation of waste management processes, reducing management costs and obtaining extra income from the management of these materials. In addition, for companies certified with ISO 14001, it provides added value in terms of concrete action in the field of waste.
This certification allows organizations to:
- Optimize waste management processes.
- Economic benefits: it reduces the costs derived from waste management, by reducing them and, at the same time, obtaining extra income from the management of these materials instead of their destination as waste.
- contribute to the promotion of the Circular Economy, allowing organizations to anticipate the legal provisions that are going to be enacted in this area.
- for companies certified with ISO 14001, it provides added value of concrete action in terms of waste.
