This International Standard specifies requirements to plan, establish, implement, operate, monitor, review, maintain and provide a documented integrated facility management (FM) system within the context of managing an organization's operational activities and risks. The extent of the application depends on factors such as the overall mission and policies of the demand organization, the nature of its activities, products and services and the location where and the conditions in which it functions. The requirements specified in this International Standard are non-sector specific and intended to be applicable to all organizations, or parts thereof, whether public or private sector, and regardless of the type, size, and nature of the organization or geographical location. The extent of application of these requirements depends on the organization's operating environment and complexity - the overall mission and policies of the demand organization, the nature of its activities, products and services the scale as well as and diversity of geographical location where such a standard would have immense benefits. The standard can be applied to both insourced and outsourced service provision of facility management. This International Standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to: a) establish, implement, maintain and improve an integrated FM system; b) assure itself of conformity with its stated management policy; c) demonstrate conformity with this International Standard by: 1) making a self-determination and self-declaration; 2) seeking confirmation of its conformance by parties having an interest in the organization, such as customers; 3) seeking confirmation of its self-declaration by a party external to the organization; 4) seeking certification/registration of its FM system by an accredited third party certification body. This International Standard also provides, in Annex A, informative guidance on its use. Annex A presents examples, best practices and strategy options for use. It is not intended to prescribe detailed elements, as the implementation will vary based on the organization's mission, market and goals. NOTE 1 For the purposes of this International Standard, the term "FM management system" is used to refer to a management system for facility management. NOTE 2 For the purposes of this International Standard, the term "organization" or "top management" will refer to the FM organization or FM top management unless otherwise stated. NOTE 3 This plan may refer to either a decision on a 1) totally outsourced service delivery, 2) a combination of outsourced/out tasked services and internally provided services, or 3) total internally provided service delivery
